Easy Lactose Free Homemade Caramel Sauce
With only four ingredients, this homemade lactose-free caramel sauce is a rich and buttery concoction of white sugar, salt, butter and heavy cream.
Ahhhh fall, oh how I adore you! The baking, the colour of the leaves, the warm and cozy nights. I sure did miss you! To kick off fall baking, I’ve decided to make some homemade caramel sauce using lactose-free butter and whipping cream. I know warming sugar on the stove can be a bit daunting but trust me, it is much easier than it appears.
Now of course you can drive to your local grocery store and purchase caramel sauce but why? Homemade caramel sauce tastes AAAMAZZING and let’s be honest, where are you going to find lactose-free caramel.

Storing Homemade Caramel Sauce:
This homemade caramel sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks in an air-tight container. You can also freeze this homemade caramel sauce in the freezer for up to three months in an airtight container as well. Just remember to thaw in the fridge the night before.
Step By Step Instructions:
Step One:
First, Gather your ingredients and turn the stove top on to medium low heat.
Add in the sugar and allow it to fully melt and turn brown.
Try to avoid mixing while the sugar is melting. This process can take anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes depending on your stove.
Step Two:
Next, take the pot off the stove and add in butter, only do this when the sugar has turned brown.
Be careful here, as the sugar will sizzle and bubble when adding the butter.
Mix the butter into the sugar using a spatula and place back on the stovetop.
Step Three:
Finally, slowly pour in the whipping cream and mix. Add in salt, mix then take the pot off the stove and allow to cool completely before transferring to an air-tight container.
Lactose Free Homemade Caramel Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 cup Whipping Cream lactose free
- 6 tbsp. Butter lactose free
Instructions
- Gather your ingredients and turn the stove top on to medium low heat.
- Add sugar to a cooking pot and allow it to fully melt and turn brown.
- Once your sugar has finally melted and turned brown, take the pot off the stove and add in the lactose free butter.
- Mix the butter into the sugar using a spatula and place back on the stove top.
- Slowly pour in the whipping cream and mix.
- Add in salt
- Mix then take the pot off the stove and allow to cool completely before transferring to an air tight container.
Tips For Lactose – Free Homemade Caramel Sauce:
- PATIENTS! you have to be patient when making homemade caramel sauce. This process cannot be rushed.
- Try to avoid over mixing or even mixing at all while the sugar is melting. Just sit and watch the magic happen.
- When adding the whipping cream, pour a small amount into the pot before adding the entire cream. The sugar will sizzle and steam, so pour slowly.
- For a not-so-thick caramel, microwave for a few seconds before serving.
Variations:
- You can always add vanilla extract for added flavor.
- Instead of using granulated sugar, use brown sugar for more of a butterscotch flavor.
