Easy Three Ingredient Roti Recipe
This straightforward recipe for Roti with only three ingredients is simple to prepare and creates a deliciously soft bread. Roti is perfect to pair with any main dish or savour by itself.
Growing up, my family and I had to move A LOT! Being raised in a single-parent household things were not as easy. If we couldn’t afford rent we had to move to something more affordable and in each move, more and more items would get lost. Pictures would go missing, toys would get left behind and so on; however, in all the moves that we had to make the one thing that stayed close to my family is this cast iron plate aka Tawah.
I have a love/hate relationship with this plate. When I look at it I am reminded of my childhood (which wasn’t the best at no fault of my mother) but it is also one of those items that I know if something were to happen to it, it would break my heart because, as I mentioned earlier, it came with us EVERYWHERE!
This easy to follow roti recipe is made with three ingredients and although it can be time consuming, I promise you, the end results are AAAMAZING!!!
Lets jump right in …
What Is Roti?:
Roti, is a flatbread crafted from basic ingredients, such as flour, butter and water. It serves as a versatile accompaniment to various dishes like curries and soups or stands wonderfully on its own as a delightful snack!
Is Roti The Same As Naan?
Naan differs significantly from roti; Naan boasts a thicker and richer texture, involving a more complex array of ingredients. In contrast, roti remains a simple flatbread made with only three basic ingredients – flour, butter and water.
Both are absolutely delicious!
Why You Will Love This Recipe:
- This roti recipe only requires three ingredients.
- If you enjoy eating carbs like myself then this is the recipe for you.
- This roti recipe is soft and easy to make.
- The butter in this roti recipe is made with lactose-free butter.
Equipment Needed:
Stand Mixer or Large Mixing Bowl: For your flour.
Small Bowl: For your melted butter.
Rolling Pin: To roll out the dough.
Hot plate: To make the roti on.
Kettle: For boiling water.
Thermal Container: For storing roti
Parchment Paper or Tin Foil: To keep the roti warm.
Clean Counter Top: For rolling out dough.
Pastry Brush: For brushing butter on the roti.
Recipe At A Glance:
Flour: The main component for roti.
Water: For mixing with the dough.
Butter: To soften the dough.
Step By Step Instructions:
Step One:
Place the hot plate onto the stove and turn the stove on to low heat. This will give your hot plate to slowly heat up as you prepare your roti.
Add water to a kettle and turn it on. In the mean time, gather your ingredients.
Step Two:
Using a stand mixer with a dough hook, add five cups of flour, two full squares of butter and about two-three cups of hot water then mix until the dough is soft. If the dough is dry, add more water.
The goal here is to achieve a soft buttery dough.
After fully incorporated, rest the dough for at least ten minutes or so.
Step Three:
Add one cup of butter to a microwave safe bowl and place that bowl on top of the hot plate. Allow the butter to melt then take it off the hot plate and set aside.
Step Four:
Take your dough and start rolling out small dough balls.
Step Five:
Dust some flour onto a clean surface and begin rolling out the dough using a rolling pin.
This part takes A LOT of practice! Don’t feel discouraged if your roti does not come out evenly round. This part took me years to master!
Step Six:
Once you have a rolled out dough, add the roti to the hot plate and allow it to cook on one side.
Using your hands or a spatula, move the roti in a circular motion on the hot plate. After about five minutes flip the roti onto the other side and again move the roti in a circular motion so the roti gets cooked completely.
You will know the roti is cooked when both sides have brown spots on it.
Step Seven:
Once the roti is cooked, place it onto a plate or in a thermal container, and brush some butter on the roti.
Step Eight:
Repeat steps 5-7 until there is no dough left to cook.
It is absolutely acceptable to eat roti on its own ( my kids do it all the time) or you can add roti to any dish.
Ways To Eat Roti:
You can either eat roti on its own, or any type of curry will work. Chicken curry, dhaal. Beef Vindaloo.
How To Store Roti:
The best way to store roti is using a thermal storage container. This way your roti will stay warm and fresh.
Add either parchment paper or tin foil into the container before adding the roti to keep the roti fresh.
If you do not own a thermal storage container, wrap your roti in tin foil.
Tips And Variations:
- You can skip the butter altogether, however, keep in mind that the roti will not be as soft without the butter.
- Yes, you can freeze roti! Just add parchment paper between each roti and store in a large Ziploc bag or air tight container. Thaw when ready to use.
- Fresh roti is better than frozen roti.
- If you don’t have a stand mixer with a dough hook, not a problem. You can knead the dough using your knuckles. The stand mixer makes the process a lot easier.
- Roll the dough into small smooth balls.
- Allow the dough to rest for at least ten minutes before making roti.
- Use a rolling pin to evenly roll out the dough.
- Add a small amount of butter to the hot plate so the roti doesn’t stick.
- Dust the counter top with flour before you begin to roll out the dough.
