How To Make A Pie Crust

A step by step tutorial on How To Make A Pie Crust.

pie crust dough

Today I am going to show you how to create a pie crust. Now don’t get me wrong, I know there are a ton of recipes out there and perhaps you have your favorite, but THIS pie crust, well this pie crust came from one of my favorite cookbooks – “Book Of Pie”.

First, in a mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, and salt. whisk everything together until there are no lumps. Next, you want to add shortening and cold/frozen butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry blender, mix the butter and shortening into the flour until fully incorporated. Finally, add small amounts of ice cold water until the dough is soft. Roll the dough into a ball and divide in half. Wrap each dough in saran wrap and freeze over night or for at least twenty minutes before rolling out.

I am still a beginner at making pies, and this is the pie recipe I have been working with.

Let’s get to work!

What Does Lactose Free Mean?

First and foremost, I try my best to incorporate lactose free ingredients in all my recipes. These ingredients can include, butter, milk, cream cheese etc. With that being said, sometimes it is hard to make an entire recipe using ALL lactose free ingredients. For example, my ice cream recipes include, condensed milk- NOT LACTOSE FREE.

Contrary to what some may believe, lactose – free is not the same as dairy free. Lactose – free still contains milk, however, there is a certain component, I believe a type of sugar (I may be wrong) where the lactose is removed from dairy, making it lactose – free. Dairy free on the other hand, contains ZERO milk. Alternatives for dairy free are almond milk, oat milk, soy milk etc. You can learn more about the differences here.

Which Ingredients Are Lactose Free?

  • Butter – I used lactose free Lactantia butter

How To Store The Perfect Pie Crust:

When storing pie crust, you want to flatten the dough into a disc shape, wrap the dough with saran wrap and freeze your dough until you are ready to use it.

When you are ready to use your pie dough, allow the dough to thaw and rest out for at least twenty minutes or so before rolling it out.
