Chocolate Bundt Cake

Hello fellow bakers, welcome to my Bundt pan post.

While scrolling through Pinterest as I always do, I came across a gorgeous and I mean GORGEOUS red velvet bundt cake! Instantly, I became OBSESSED with bundt cakes.

What is a Bundt Pan? Who invented them? What types of decorative Bundt Pans are there? I needed to know everything and so, as usual, I took it upon myself to search for as much information as I could using my good friend Google and other bloggers.

Tip: The more intricate your bundt pan is, the more challenging it will be to release your cake.

What Is A Bundt Pan?

According to Google and thebakeschool.com, a bundt pan has a fluted shape with a hole in the center like a doughnut. The pan itself has designs directly moulded into the cake pan and if done correctly, the designs come out onto the cake.

A Short History

According to Food and Wine Bundt pans were founded by a gentleman, who goes by the name H. David Dalquist in the year 1950. He and his wife, Dorothy owned a company in Minnesota that made bakeware. At some point a group of women came to him asking if he could create a cake pan much like the Gugelhupf Pan that was used by women in Europe.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that the Bundt Pan became a huge hit after a successful bake-off hosted by Pillsbury flour company (you can find more info here) since then Bundt Pans have become a staple in every household.

How To Evenly Get Cake Batter Into The Bundt Pan

I have seen a few methods that others use when getting the batter into the cake pan. I have seen bakers pour the entire batter into the pan and give it a slight bang on the table. I have also seen bakers simply pour the batter into the cake pan and bake.

The method I use, and I have seen others use this method as well, is pouring the batter into the bundt pan using a large spoon, this way the batter gets evenly spread. I then, of course, give it a light slam on the table to remove any air bubbles and then bake.

How To Properly Grease A Bundt Pan

Greasing a bundt pan is essential! Even if you purchase one that says “nonstick.” I saw this method while scrolling through thebakeschool.com and it has done WONDERS for me! I even stopped using parchment paper for my cake lining and went right to this method. I have zero issues releasing my cakes.

You will use 1 part vegetable shortening, 1 part oil, 1 part flour (use cocoa powder for chocolate cake)

It is that simple! I generally go for 1 cup flour, 1 cup vegetable shortening, and 1 cup oil then store the remaining leftovers in an air-tight container for up to 1 week.

  • 1 part vegetable shortening
  • 1 part flour
  • 1 part oil

Tips When Using A Bundt Pan
