Sauteed Mushroom and Onions

If you’re looking for a quick and flavorful side dish, these sauteed mushrooms and onions are a must-try. They’re buttery, garlicky, and have just the right balance of savory soy sauce and nutty sesame oil. Whether you’re serving them over chicken, rice, or even on top of burgers, this recipe comes together in under 20 minutes and always hits the spot.

Sauteed Mushroom and Onions

To begin, melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the butter is hot and bubbling, add the sliced onions and cook them until they turn soft and slightly golden.

Next, stir in the mushrooms, making sure to spread them out so they have room to brown. As they cook, the mushrooms will release their moisture, so continue stirring occasionally until the liquid evaporates and the mushrooms start to caramelize. Then, add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, just until fragrant.

After that, drizzle in the soy sauce and sesame oil, gently stirring to coat everything evenly. At this stage, taste and adjust with a pinch of salt if needed.

Finally, allow the mushrooms and onions to cook for another minute so the flavors fully blend together. Once everything looks glossy and well-coated, remove the skillet from the heat and serve right away as a savory side dish or flavorful topping, yum!

What Does Lactose Free Mean?

First and foremost, I try my best to incorporate lactose free ingredients in all my recipes. These ingredients can include, butter, milk, cream cheese etc. With that being said, sometimes it is hard to make an entire recipe using ALL lactose free ingredients. For example, my ice cream recipes include, condensed milk- NOT LACTOSE FREE.

Contrary to what some may believe, lactose – free is not the same as dairy free. Lactose – free still contains milk, however, there is a certain component, I believe a type of sugar (I may be wrong) where the lactose is removed from dairy, making it lactose – free. Dairy free on the other hand, contains ZERO milk. Alternatives for dairy free are almond milk, oat milk, soy milk etc. You can learn more about the differences here.

Which Ingredients Are Lactose Free?

  • Butter – I use Natrel Lactose free butter.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes! You can cook the mushrooms and onions up to a day in advance. Simply reheat them in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through.

What type of mushrooms work best?

Button, cremini, or baby bella mushrooms work great. However, you can also use shiitake or portobello for a richer flavor.

How do I prevent soggy mushrooms?

Avoid overcrowding the pan. If the mushrooms are too close together, they’ll steam instead of sauté, so cook in batches if needed.

What can I serve these sautéed mushrooms and onions with?

They’re delicious over steak, chicken, burgers, pasta, rice, or even on top of roasted vegetables. They’re a versatile side dish that pairs with many meals.

Tips And Variations

  1. Don’t overcrowd the pan—this helps the mushrooms brown instead of steam.
  2. Swap the butter for olive oil if you prefer a dairy-free version.
  3. Add a pinch of chili flakes for some heat.
  4. Sprinkle in fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for extra flavor.
  5. Garnish with cilantro for more flavor.

Troubleshooting Common Mistakes

1. Mushrooms turned out soggy – This usually happens if the pan is overcrowded. Cook in a large skillet and give the mushrooms space so they can brown properly instead of steaming.

2. Onions burned too quickly – If the heat is too high, onions can scorch before they soften. Keep the skillet at medium heat and stir often.

3. Garlic burned – Garlic cooks fast. Always add it after the mushrooms and onions have softened so it doesn’t overcook and turn bitter.
