Homemade Jalapeno Bread

If you love a little kick with your bread, this homemade jalapeño bread is the perfect twist on my classic homemade bread recipe.

Homemade Jalapeno Bread

This bread is soft, fluffy, and with just the right amount of spice, it’s a bread that pairs beautifully with soups, chili, or even toasted with a smear of butter. Using fresh jalapeños makes the flavor pop, while the base bread dough keeps it light and tender.

To start, you’ll want to bring together all your dry ingredients — flour, sugar, salt, and yeast — in a large mixing bowl. Once that’s done, pour in your warm water and oil and mix until the dough starts to come together. Then, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8 to 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.

Next, place your dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise until it doubles in size — about an hour. Once it’s puffed up, gently punch it down to release the air and shape it into a loaf. From there, tuck it into a greased pan and let it rise again until it looks nice and full.

Finally, bake your bread at 375°F (190°C) for 25 to 30 minutes, or until it’s golden brown, and makes that hollow “thump” sound when tapped. Let it cool a bit before slicing,

Let’s bake bread!

What Does Lactose Free Mean?

First and foremost, I try my best to incorporate lactose free ingredients in all my recipes. These ingredients can include, butter, milk, cream cheese etc. With that being said, sometimes it is hard to make an entire recipe using ALL lactose free ingredients. For example, my ice cream recipes include, condensed milk- NOT LACTOSE FREE.

Contrary to what some may believe, lactose – free is not the same as dairy free. Lactose – free still contains milk, however, there is a certain component, I believe a type of sugar (I may be wrong) where the lactose is removed from dairy, making it lactose – free. Dairy free on the other hand, contains ZERO milk. Alternatives for dairy free are almond milk, oat milk, soy milk etc. You can learn more about the differences here.

Which Ingredients Are Lactose Free?

  • Zero!

Frequently Asked Questions?

Can I add cheese to the dough?

Yes! Shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, or mozzarella all work beautifully. Fold about 1 cup of cheese into the dough when you add the jalapeños, or sprinkle some on top before baking for a golden, melty crust.

Can I make this bread less spicy?

Once completely cooled, wrap the loaf in plastic wrap or foil and store it at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, you can freeze it for up to 3 months. Just make sure it’s tightly wrapped to prevent freezer burn.

Can I make cupcakes with this batter?

Absolutely! For a milder loaf, remove all the seeds and white ribs from the jalapeños before adding them in. You can also use just one pepper instead of two or swap fresh jalapeños for pickled ones — they add flavor without too much heat.

Homemade Jalapeno Bread Tips and Variations

  1. Cheesy Jalapeño Bread – Add 1 cup of shredded cheddar or mozzarella to the dough for a cheesy twist.
  2. Extra spice – Mix in red chili flakes or leave the seeds in the jalapeños.
  3. Milder version – Use roasted jalapeños for a smoky, less intense flavor.

Troubleshooting Common Mistakes

1. Bread didn’t rise enough: If your loaf turned out a bit dense, it’s usually because the yeast wasn’t active or the dough didn’t have enough time to rise. Make sure your water is warm (not hot!) — around 105–110°F is perfect. If it’s too hot, it can kill the yeast. Also, give the dough enough time to double in size before baking; cooler kitchens might need a little extra patience.

2. Crust turned out too hard: If your crust feels a little tough, it might have baked too long or at too high a temperature. Try covering the loaf loosely with foil halfway through baking, or brush the top with melted butter as soon as it comes out of the oven for a softer finish.

3. Bread is too spicy: Fresh jalapeños can vary in heat level. If your bread comes out spicier than expected, try removing all the seeds and white ribs next time — that’s where most of the heat hides. You can also swap fresh jalapeños for pickled ones, which have a milder, tangy flavor.
