How to build a baking routine

Whether you’re a passionate home baker or running a baking blog, establishing a solid baking routine can help you stay organized, reduce stress, and consistently create delicious treats. Here’s how to build a baking routine that works for you, no matter your skill level or schedule.

How to build a baking routine:

A routine not only keeps you on track but also ensures you make time for what you love: baking!

Why Have A Baking Routine?

Having a baking routine, whether for your business or blog, helps you stay organized and avoid last-minute chaos. Having a routine allows you to balance baking with your other responsibilities, such as kids, family, work life, and so on. With any routine (fitness, blogging, cleaning, baking), you can track your progress and improve your skills and, of course, most importantly, enjoy the process without feeling overwhelmed.

Sample Weekly Baking Routine:

When I first started my baking blog, I was ALLL over the map! I was trying to juggle family life while also learning how to manage a blog. I was juggling baking but also learning to take pictures, writing my recipes and blogging about it. I had ZERO organizing to my life … literally!

Since then, I’ve learned to create a routine that works for me,

Here’s an example to inspire you:

Monday: Research new recipes or organize your planner/week.

Wednesday: Prep for weekend baking (e.g., grocery shopping, measuring ingredients).

Saturday: Bake delicious treats and take beautiful pictures for your blog.

Sunday: Plan for next week..

Something simple and not to chaotic.

The Benefits Of A Baking Routine:

As I mentioned, without a baking routine, I was all over the map with zero organization to my baking and blogging. Now, with a simple routine, not only have I built a consistent baking routine, but i have a routine which has helped boost confidence in the kitchen. This new routine has helped manage time better, its allowed me to experiment with new techniques or flavors, and of course, having a routine helped build a stronger connection with my baking journey.

Below are a few tips on how you can build a successful baking/blogging routine.

One: Set your goal:

Before creating your routine, think about what you want to achieve:

  • Are you baking for fun, to improve your skills, or for your blog?
  • Do you want to experiment with new recipes or perfect old ones?
  • Are you baking daily, weekly, or seasonally?
  • Your goals will shape the structure and frequency of your routine.

Two: choose your baking days:

Pick specific days and times to bake, doing this will help you, build consistency and avoid overcommitting. It will help reserve enough time for prep, baking, and cleanup. For example, Weeknight Routine: Quick bakes like cookies or muffins. Weekend Routine: Time-intensive recipes like bread or layered cakes. Picking days to bake makes the entire process much smoother!

Three: plan ahead:

Planning is key to a successful baking routine! Be sure to create a recipe list, keep a list of recipes you want to try. Prioritize seasonal recipes or family favorites. Shop in advance, check your pantry and buy any missing ingredients ahead of time. Prepare your tools, make sure all your baking tools are clean and accessible.

Pro Tip: Use a planner or calendar to schedule baking days, jot down recipe ideas, and track progress.

Four: build a prep routine:

Efficient preparation saves time and minimizes stress. Always read the recipe first and understand the steps and timing.

Be sure to measure ingredients beforehand, and have the ingredients at arsm length and ready to go.

Always, always, always, preheat the oven early. Avoid delays by preheating while you prep.

Five: find a workflow that suits you:

Baking routines vary depending on your style. Experiment to find what works best for you:

Batch Baking: Bake multiple items in one session to save time. If you’re up for the challenge, that is!

Step-by-Step: Spread tasks over several days (e.g., dough on one day, bake on another). I prefer this, as I hate feeling too overwhelmed

Collaborative Baking: Bake with friends or family to make it more fun and efficient.

Six: incorporate cleanup into your routine:

A clean workspace is essential for a stress-free baking session. Clean as you go to avoid overwhelming messes, be sure to set aside time for washing dishes and wiping down counters.

Seven: keep a baking journal:

Track your baking adventures with a journal:

Note successful recipes and tweaks, and record lessons from mishaps.

Be sure to reflect on what you enjoyed most about the process and stay flexible.

Life happens, and some days you may not feel like baking. That’s okay! Adjust your routine as needed and remember that baking should be enjoyable, not a chore.
