How to Stay Organized in the Kitchen
As a part-time blogger who enjoys baking, staying organized in the kitchen is key to achieving stress-free, efficient baking. Here are eight tips on how to stay organized in the kitchen without feeling overwhelmed.
Staying organized as a baker in the kitchen can be stressful! Especially when we ALREADY have so much going on everywhere else in our lives: kids, work, relationships, etc.
Whether you’re preparing for a big event or managing your daily baking/blogging routine, planning ahead can save you time, it can help reduce waste, and help stay focused.
Let’s dive into some tips on how you can stay organized in the kitchen!
1. plan your baking schedule:
Start by deciding what you’ll bake and when. Create a schedule around the recipes you will be baking for your blog. Remember to schedule time for not only baking but also time for some time for taking pictures and posting on your blog.
Consider these tips:
- Monthly Overview: Create a monthly calendar and list the recipes you plan to bake each week.
- Prioritize Events: Bake items with deadlines (like birthday cakes or catering orders) first.
- Batch Baking: Group similar items together (e.g., cookies or bread) to save on prep and cleanup time.
2. take inventory of ingredients:
Before you shop, check your pantry for ingredients you already have and decide if you can use alternative ingredients for the recipe you plan to bake. For example, my chocolate chip muffins made with honey. Who needs sugar when you have honey!
Track staples like flour, sugar, eggs, and spices. Rotate ingredients to use older ones first, ensuring freshness.
3. create a grocery list:
A detailed shopping list ensures you won’t forget anything mid-bake. Let’s be real, forgetting an ingredient during mid bake sucks (i almost always forget salt!)
Instead, categorize items by organizing your grocery list by section (e.g., dairy, dry goods, produce). Stick to essentials and avoid overbuying by focusing on what you need for the week’s plan.
4. prep ingredients in advance:
Prepping ahead saves time and makes baking more enjoyable, TRUST ME! try baking a cake, stacking a cake, and decorating a cake ALL in the same day …. It’s not fun!
Instead, prep everything in advance as best as you can. Take one day to bake the cake, the next day to stack, and finally, the last day to decorate.
Here are a couple of other tips when prepping ingredients in advance:
1. Measure in Batches: Measure dry ingredients like flour and sugar into containers for specific recipes.
2. Chop and Store: Prep fruits, nuts, or other mix-ins and store them in labeled containers.

5. use tools to stay organized:
Leverage technology to simplify your meal planning schedule, use digital planners, or recipe apps for quick reference.
6. optimize your workspace:
A well-organized kitchen enhances productivity. You can do this by:
1. Declutter counters, be sure to keep your workspace clear of unnecessary tools and appliances.
2. Group Essentials, store frequently used items (like measuring cups and mixing bowls) within easy reach.
Measure ingredients beforehand and keep everything at arms length
Staying organized in the kitchen makes a big difference! It’s better than running around with your head cut off, am I right?
Organized baking is fun baking!
7. incorporate leftovers:
Don’t let leftovers go to waste! Repurpose ingredients, turn extra pie crust into hand pies, gallets, and turn those leftover frosting into cake pops.
Be sure to store baked goods in the freezer for quick access when needed.
